Monitor Calls for Release of 1,790 Palestinian-Syrians in Assad Regime’s Custody amid Coronavirus Fears

The Action Group for the Palestinians of Syria (AGPS) said that the lives of more than 1,790 Palestinian-Syrians in the prisons and detention centers of the Assad regime are at serious risk of the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a press release issued on Sunday, the London-based monitoring group indicated that detainees are being held in extremely dire, inhumane conditions, adding that these prisons do not meet any of the standards and conditions set by international conventions for the places of arrest and detention.

The group demanded the immediate release of the Palestinian-Syrian detainees from the Assad regime’s prisons amid fears of an outbreak of the pandemic in Syria. It held the Assad regime fully responsible for the safety of Palestinian-Syrian detainees in Syria.

The United Nations earlier called on the Assad regime to “release the detainees” in order to avoid more human losses in Syria, warning of the serious risks of the spread of the coronavirus among detainees in the Assad regime’s prisons.

The Syrian Opposition Coalition also called on the United Nations and all international organizations to exert pressure on the Assad regime in order to force it to allow access to detention centers and ascertain the measures being taken to prevent the spread of the virus among detainees. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people’s unity within the same Syrian soil
is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its
symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes
against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
