Rights Group: Assad Regime & Russia Violating UNSC Resolution 2401 & Targeting Civilians in Eastern Ghouta

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said that it had documented the deaths of 107 civilians in Syria during the first 72 hours following the UN Security Council’s adoption of resolution 2401 calling for 30-day ceasefire in Syria last Saturday.

In a new report released on Wednesday, the Network said that the Assad regime forces killed 83 civilians, including 18 children and 13 women. The US-led anti-ISIS coalition forces killed 16 civilians, including 10 children and four women, the monitoring group added. The victims also included four children who were killed by the ISIS extremist group, while two children and a woman were killed in attacks the Network said they were untraceable.

The report listed the gravest violations of UNSC resolution 2401 in the period between 24-27 February. The violations included attacks on vital civilian centers by the Assad regime forces, including a mosque and a popular market," the Network said.

According to the report, Assad regime's helicopters dropped no fewer than 47 barrel bombs on rebel-held areas in the reporting period, 43 of which hit Rural Damascus and four others hit Hama province.

There are now at least 1,350 people suffering injuries in eastern Ghouta, including about 670 who are in need of special medical care, the monitoring group said. It added that approximately 270 others are in need of prosthetic limbs.

In a separate report released on Sunday, the Network said that as of February 24 at least 13,000 people have been killed in eastern Ghouta since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in March 2011.

The Syrian Coalition on Monday said that the Assad regime and Russia’s violations of UN Security Council resolution 2401 in astern Ghouta are aimed at paving the way for a genocide in the besieged Damascus suburb.

The Coalition said that military operations by the Assad regime and its allies did not stop, adding that one of the massacres claimed the lives of head of the local council in the town of Shifoniyah Mohammed Jamous and two members of the council.

The UN Security Council on Saturday passed a resolution calling for a 30-day ceasefire in Syria to allow UN aid agencies to deliver humanitarian aid to all those in need in the besieged areas.

Russia on Tuesday announced the establishment of a daily five-hour truce to allow the evacuation of civilians from eastern Ghouta. The Coalition stressed that this move was aimed at circumventing UN Security Council Resolution 2401 as well as emptying the Damascus suburb from its local people to change the demographic landscape in the Damascus suburb.
