The Peace and Spring Marathon took place in Afrin on Saturday, marking a significant milestone as the first of its kind in the liberated areas. A total of 395 participants of all ages joined the event, covering a 10 km distance from Maaratah to Afrin. The event was themed “We Run for Freedom.”
The race saw the presence of President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi Al-Bahra, alongside Vice-Presidents Abdel Majeed Barakat and Abdel Hakim Bashar, along with several members of the political committee and General Assembly. Representatives from numerous Syrian revolutionary bodies, institutions, associations, and unions also attended.
The marathon was sponsored by the SOC and supervised by the Syrian National Olympic Committee, the Syrian Revolutionaries Youth Association, the Syrian Women’s Authority, the Syrian Civil Defense, and Syria TV as a media sponsor. Qasim Aliwi secured first place, followed by Jamal Al-Ahmad in second and Jamil Jamalo in third.
Special recognition was accorded to the oldest marathon runner, 57-year-old Mr. Muhammad Kilani, and the youngest participant, 15-year-old Haider Qarqouz.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from diverse segments and sects of Syria, underscoring the community’s eagerness to rejuvenate sporting activities in the liberated areas.
