The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said that at least 19,947 barrel bombs have been dropped by the Assad regime on rebel-held areas across Syria since the adoption of UN Security Council resolution 2139 on February 22, 2014.
The UN resolution condemned the use of barrel bombs and demanded that “all parties immediately cease all attacks against civilians, as well as the indiscriminate employment of weapons in populated areas, including shelling and aerial bombardment, such as the use of barrel bombs.”
UN resolution 2139 expressed commitment “to take further steps in the case of non-compliance with this resolution.”
SNHR said that nearly 8,136 civilians, including 2,274 children and 2, 036 women were killed in the barrel bomb attacks between the period from February 22, 2014 to February 20, 2016. The victims are distributed across Syria as follows: 4,754 in Aleppo, 967 in Dara’a, 936 in Idlib, 441 in Homs, 438 in Hama, 371 in Rural Damascus, 71 in Raqqa, 61 in Al-Hasaka, 57 in Deir Ezzor, 19 in Quneitra, 12 in Damascus, 7 in Tartus, and 2 in Lattakia.
