The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said that the European Union, which considers Bashar al Assad a dictator who fights against his own people, rejects any scenario in which the current government and Assad would remain in power.
Mogherini on Tuesday told the France Inter radio station that the problem now is not linked to the fate of one person; the challenge is how to start a transition of power and change the management of the country, the constitution and the power system while preserving the state structure and prevent it from collapse.
Meanwhile, the United Nations aid chief said that the humanitarian situation is “extremely dire” in the Syrian town of Daraya, a town besieged by regime forces, amid severe shortages of food and medicine.
The Assad regime has not responded to “countless requests” for permission to deliver relief supplies to the town of 4,000, southwest of Damascus, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O’Brien told a news briefing in Geneva on Tuesday following a UN assessment mission last week.
“We will continue to press the Syrian authorities relentlessly for us to have that safe unimpeded access to Daraya,” O’Brien said. (Source: Agencies)
