General Coordinator of the opposition’s High Negotiations Committee (HNC) Riad Hijab said that the grave violations of the truce by the Assad regime and its allies confirm they are keen on derailing the political process.
Hijab called on the international community to work to end the suffering of the Syrian people by enforcing Articles 12, 13 and 14 of the UN Security Council resolution 2254 (2015).
Hijab made his remarks over the past two days after consultations with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, France, Great Britain, Germany, and Norway.
“Alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people can be achieved through lifting the sieges; allowing humanitarian agencies to deliver aid to all those in need; releasing all detainees; stopping aerial and artillery bombardments and all attacks against civilians; stopping forced displacement of the population; and stopping executions.”
Hijab warned of the very dire humanitarian situation in several Syrian provinces, particularly in Aleppo where regime forces and their allies have committed appalling massacres in recent days. He warned of the consequences of regime plans to escalate hostilities in Aleppo as it has been ramping forces and mercenaries to launch an all-out offensive on the city.
“Any military escalation by the regime would have grave consequences as it would cause new mass exodus of Syrians to neighboring countries and to Europe,” he added.
Hijab called for holding an emergency meeting in Paris of the Friends of the Syrian People Group in order to tackle the crisis and stop the aggression by the Assad regime and its allies on the Syrian people as well as to force the regime and its allies to abide by international resolutions and stop their grave violations against the Syrian people.
