The Furqan Brigades of the Free Syrian Army in Dara’a province on Thursday announced the launch of a new offensive against regime forces in the area sprawling parts of northern rural Dara’a, northeastern rural Quneitra, and southwestern rural Damascus. The new offensive in the strategic area known as the “Death Triangle” is aimed at easing pressure on the towns of Daraya, Khan Alshih and western Ghouta which have come under renewed attack by regime forces.
Fighters of the Furqan Brigades on Thursday began the offensive with capturing several regime positions near Tal Qarin hill north of Dara’a and near Khan Alshih.
In clashes that broke out yesterday morning, the FSA fighters destroyed a missile base and a heavy machine gun belonging to regime forces, forcing regime forces to retreat from around the town of Khan Alshih into the Death Triangle area.
Spokesman for the Furqan Brigades Suhaib Alrahil said that the offensive is primarily aimed at distracting regime forces and easing pressure on the battlefronts in western Ghouta, especially on Khan Alshih.
Alrahil added that no truce has been observed in the Death Triangle area despite the US-Russian brokered truce which began in 27 February. He pointed out that the Furqan Brigades have not withdrawn any forces from the Yarmouk Basin area in western rural Dara’a which has been the scene of fierce battles between the FSA and ISIS-linked militias.
