Three detainees at Suweida Central Prison were killed in random shootings by regime forces who tried to storm the facility late on Friday. The latest inmate to die in the prison was Mohammad Raslan from Hama province. Around 27 inmates were injured in the storming attempt.
The Syrian Coalition said that the Assad regime has responded with brutal crackdown to the legitimate demands of the detainees who reaffirmed that their longing for justice and freedom will not fade away.
The Coalition warned of the consequences of the regime’s crackdown on Suweida Central Prison, especially as regime forces used tear gas and live ammunition to quell the revolt.
The Coalition called upon the UN Security Council to exert pressure on the Assad regime to stop its assault on the prison immediately. It called upon the UN envoy Staffan de Mistura to act urgently in order to save the lives of the prison inmates in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 2254. The Coalition also called for a UN committee to be sent to investigate the situation in the prison and ensure full protection for the detainees.
Regime security forces have jammed communications at the facility to prevent inmates from contacting the outside world. Inmates said that the committee sent by the regime’s Interior Ministry on Sunday threatened that regime forces would repeat attempts to storm the facility if the prison inmates did not hand over their mobile phones to the prison administration within 24 hours.
The Coalition pointed out that hundreds of thousands of detainees have been going through unspeakable suffering in the prisons of the Assad regime for over five years. It stressed that the terrible conditions detainees have been subjected to require a firm stance by the UN which should assume its legal, humanitarian and moral responsibilities towards the years-long suffering of detainees in Assad’s prisons.
