The Free Syrian Army and rebel groups have announced the start of the second phase of the offensive they called the “Great Epic Battle of Aleppo” which aims to break the siege by regime forces and allied foreign militias on eastern Aleppo as well as to liberate the regime-held western parts of the city.
The first phase of the offensive began on Friday with FSA and rebel fighter making substantial gains against regime forces in western Aleppo. FSA and rebel fighters are making a push on the western parts of the city after they have captured Dahiyat Al-Assad and Binyan areas.
The second phase of the FSA and rebel offensive began with a large-scale attack on the Assad Military Academy, the largest regime army base in western Aleppo. Capturing the base will allow the attacking forces to advance easily in the neighborhood of Hamdaniya and make a breakthrough towards the besieged eastern part of the city.
Activists said that fierce battles are also currently raging in the 3000 Apartments Project area in Hamdaniya, the biggest neighborhood in Western Aleppo.
President of the Syrian Coalition Anas Abdah highly praised the bravery shown by the FSA and rebel fighters who are battling the Assad regime and its allies in Aleppo.
“The brave fighters in Aleppo are fighting a great epic battle to break the siege and liberate the city from the mercenaries and enemies of civilization,” Abdah said, adding that “the free people across the world stand by the people of Aleppo.” (Source: Syrian Coalition)
