A member of the European Parliament criticized the failure of European countries to stand by the Syrian people in the war that has been waged on them by the Assad regime since 2011. The ongoing war in Syria has left hundreds of thousands killed and displaced more than half of Syria’s population.
In a television interview, Dutch member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake said that the situation in Syria is “a disgrace to our current generation,” noting that to date there is not a unified, clear position regarding the Syrian dossier among the European Union countries.
It is shameful how Europe has not upheld the principles that would put an end to the suffering of the Syrian people, Schaake said. She noted that it is strange how the European Union failed to take further steps with regards to the situation in Syria, especially towards the refugee crisis and the threats it imposes.
At least 18 civilians were killed in aerial and artillery bombardment by regime forces on Idlib and Rural Damascus on Tuesday despite the cease-fire which was announced at midnight on December 29.
The Syrian Coalition on Saturday warned of attempts by the Assad regime and its Iranian allies to sabotage the agreement as they insist on pursuing a military solution. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Office + Agencies)
