The Action Group for the Palestinians of Syria (AGPS) said that nearly 1,800 Palestinian-Syrians, including children, women, and the elderly, are still being detained by the Assad regime.
In a report marking the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the London-based watchdog group said that it compiled a list of the names of 1,797 Palestinian-Syrians who are still in the custody of the Assad regime and 620 others who died under torture in the Assad regime’s prisons.
The report indicated that the real number of detainees and victims of torture is considerably higher in view of the Assad regime’s refusal to give information about the detainees in its custody as well as the silence of the families of the victims about the deaths of their loved for fear of regime’s reprisal.
The monitoring group added that detainees in the Assad regime’s prisons are usually subjected to various methods of brutal torture and are detained in inhumane conditions amid deprivation of healthcare.
The Group called on the Assad regime to release the Palestinian-Syrian detainees whose fate is unknown. It also called for disclosing the real number of detainees, their names, and places of burial of those who died under torture, noting that their families have the right to know the fate of their loved ones.
