Syrian Opposition Coalition

Department of Media and Communications

November 20, 2022

The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) stresses that while the world celebrates World Children’s Day, Syrian children are still suffering from a tragedy that has been ongoing on for eleven years because of the Assad regime and its allies’ crimes.

Indeed, Syrian children are the most affected by the crimes of the Assad regime and its allies. The Syrian Network for Human Rights has documented at least 29,894 children killed in Syria since March 2011, of whom 182 died under torture. At least 5,162 children are still under arrest or enforced disappearance in the Assad regime’s prisons, which are widely known as “human slaughterhouses.” Moreover, hundreds of thousands of children have been displaced from their homes to makeshift camps across Syria.

Securing a safe, dignified life for the Syrian people, especially children, cannot take place without a genuine political transition that leads to a comprehensive change in Syria, and holding all war criminals accountable, chief among them is Assad. The SOC stresses the need for active states to assume their responsibilities with regard to the tragedy affecting the Syrian people, especially children. This absolute tragedy is still grinding on as a result of the Assad regime and its allies’ obstructionism and procrastination, and the failure to take action that is commensurate with the magnitude of the regime’s crimes and the size of the sacrifices that the Syrian people are making.

The SOC stresses that it will continue its struggle against the crimes of the people’s enemies until the Syrian people are liberated from tyranny and terrorism, and until achieving the Syrian people’s aspirations to build a new, democratic Syria in which the values of justice and freedom prevail.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
