SNHR: Nearly 1.3 Million People Were Forcibly Displaced in Syria in 2017

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said that approximately 1.3 million people were forcibly displaced from their homes in Syria, mostly by the Assad regime.

In a report released on Thursday, the Network said that about 450,000 civilians were forced to flee their homes because of military operations by the international anti-ISIS coalition and militias of the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as well as by the Assad regime and Russia in the northeastern province of Raqqa.

According to the report, nearly 300,000 people fled towards the northern countryside of Idlib province because of intensified attacks by the Assad regime and Russian forces on southern and eastern rural Idlib and on northern rural Hama in late 2017.

The monitoring group said that at least 10,204 civilians were killed across Syria in 2017, nearly half of them in attacks by the Assad regime.

The report indicated that 4,018 civilians, including 754 children and 591 women, were killed in attacks by regime forces and under torture in the prisons of the Assad regime. Russian forces were responsible for the death of 1,436 civilians, including 439 children and 284 women, the report added.

A total of 1,421 people, including 281 children and 148 women, were killed by the ISIS extremist group. Militias of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) were responsible for the death of 316 civilians, including 58 children and 54 women.

According to the report, 1,759 civilians, including 521 children and 332 women were killed in aerial attacks by the International anti-ISIS coalition.

The Network said it had a list of the names of 117,000 detainees in Syria, though it said it expected the figure to exceed 215,000. It noted that 99 percent of the detainees are being held by the Assad regime. The ISIS extremist group detained 539 people, while various militants groups detained 535 people.

The report added that 6,517 people were arbitrarily detained in 2017, 4,796 of them by the Assad regime and 647 by the YPG militia, the armed wing of the terrorist PYD.

The Network called for stopping all attacks on civilians across Syria and to hold those responsible to account.

The Network called on the UN Security Council to ensure full implementation of its resolutions on Syria, urging the international community to stop supplying the Assad regime with weapons as it confirmed that its forces are committing crimes against humanity. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
