30 Suwayda Detainees Suffered Fatal Torture in Assad’s Prisons Since March 2011

October 12, 2023
in Field news

Activists from Suwayda province have asserted that the plight of detainees in Assad regime prisons remains a central issue in the ongoing anti-regime demonstrations that have persisted for over fifty days throughout the province.

In addition to banners advocating for political change and the overthrow of the regime, demonstrators unveiled a banner displaying the names of approximately 30 detainees from Suwayda who perished under torture in the regime’s detention centers since the onset of the Syrian revolution in 2011. According to activists, most of these individuals were prisoners of conscience.

In the town of Al-Qurayya, located in the southern region of Suwayda, anti-regime demonstrators also exhibited photos of victims of torture in the regime’s detention centers. These images had been leaked by a defected officer several years ago. Syrian detainees and victims who met their demise under torture within the regime’s prisons have emerged as a prominent subject of concern in the Suwayda protests over the past two days.

Protesters in Karama Square emphasized that the predicament of Syrian detainees in Assad regime prisons will not fade into obscurity over time. They underscored that the Assad regime has committed war crimes and grievous violations that will forever remain etched in our collective memory.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
