The Britain-based non-governmental organization Save the Children has warned that the recent attacks on northwestern Syria pose a serious threat to the lives of children. The organization highlights the ongoing closure of schools, which is jeopardizing the education and future prospects of thousands of children.
According to Save the Children, parents have reported that their children are displaying signs of deep emotional distress in the aftermath of attacks carried out by Assad regime forces and Russia in Idlib province over recent days. The organization has documented the deaths of at least 17 children in these attacks, with hundreds more sustaining injuries within a five-day period.
Additionally, the report reveals that numerous schools in northwestern Syria are now indefinitely closed, with at least ten educational facilities having suffered partial or complete damage due to the attacks.
In a related development, the Syrian Civil Defense has issued a report stating that in the past week, 10 educational institutions were targeted in northwestern Syria. Over the same period, the Assad regime and Russia conducted 148 artillery, rocket, and air attacks in the region, which included 7 Russian air attacks, 59 rocket attacks, and 74 artillery attacks. Furthermore, there were 4 attacks involving missiles loaded with internationally banned incendiary ammunition, as well as one attack with a missile loaded with internationally prohibited cluster munitions.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) has expressed grave concern in a press release, warning that the military operations, missile attacks, and the use of internationally banned weapons by the regime directly imperil the lives of over four million civilians in northwestern Syria. This situation is also leading to a surge in displacement, with accompanying humanitarian crises, especially as the region approaches winter.
The SOC has called upon the United Nations, its Security Council, and the international community, including allied nations and concerned parties, to urgently and immediately intervene to halt the regime’s escalating aggression against the people of Idlib and the Aleppo countryside. Furthermore, they are urging swift action to provide essential humanitarian aid to avert a major and impending catastrophe for civilians in the region.
