SOC's Political Committee Sets Up Team to Monitor Syrian Refugee Situation in Lebanon

The political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) convened its routine session on Thursday, discussing the latest developments on the ground and the prevailing political landscape. Discussions also revolved around the plight of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, including the concerning incitement campaigns targeting them. In response, the committee made a decision to establish an ongoing special working group dedicated to monitoring refugee conditions and proposing actionable plans to address emerging challenges.

During the meeting, SOC President Hadi Al-Bahra provided an update on the coalition’s persistent efforts concerning Syrian refugees in Lebanon and detainees in Roumieh prison. He highlighted communications with Lebanese civil society organizations and detainee representatives, underscoring ongoing engagements with key stakeholders in the European Union and the United Nations.

Al-Bahra further detailed the SOC’s coordination efforts with its constituents, including a recent meeting with the leadership of the Assyrian Democratic Organization. Vice President Abdel Majeed Barakat outlined forthcoming activities in liberated areas, emphasizing collaborative initiatives with local forces, particularly youth engagement. He also summarized the recent Peace and Spring Marathon held in Afrin, honoring participants and organizers.

Vice President Dima Moussa reported on recent activities by the Syrian Women’s Authority and preparations for upcoming external meetings. She also provided a summary of her participation in a workshop to be held on the sidelines of the ministerial meetings on the 27th of this month at the upcoming Brussels conference.

SOC Secretary-General Haytham Rahmeh presented the General Secretariat’s report, highlighting budgetary matters, ongoing issues concerning Syrians, and logistical support provided by the Secretariat.

The committee assessed reports from SOC offices and foreign missions in Germany, Italy, Egypt, Jordan, and France. Anas Al-Abdah, a member of the political committee, briefed attendees on the Syrian Negotiations Commission’s recent activities and workshops in Geneva, particularly those addressing Syrian detainees.

Additionally, the audience reviewed reports from SOC working groups, including military assessments of ground situations, concerns over increasing regime attacks on civilians with the use of suicide drones, and interfaith dialogues with local authorities and religious leaders in Afrin.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
