President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi Al-Bahra, held a meeting with Nathalie Broadhurst, Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations in New York, to discuss the Syrian crisis and its challenges. The focus was particularly on the stalled political process and ways to revitalize it for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
The meeting, attended by SOC’s Vice President Dima Moussa, also delved into the SOC’s vision for addressing the lack of international response to the escalating humanitarian needs in Syria and for Syrian refugees in neighboring countries.
Extensive attention was given to the dire situation of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, highlighting the catastrophic conditions they are enduring across various aspects. Discussions also touched upon the plight of Syrian detainees and political prisoners in Lebanese prisons, notably Roumieh prison.
Al-Bahra presented a comprehensive paper outlining these issues along with proposals for addressing them. These proposals included practical steps to tackle the refugee crisis in Lebanon and alleviate the mounting pressure on Syrian refugees.
Emphasizing the unsafe conditions in Syria for refugee return, Al-Bahra underscored the necessity for any repatriation to be voluntary, dignified, and secure, in accordance with international standards, which the Lebanese government is urged to uphold.
