The Syrian National Coalition expresses its absolute confidence in the steadfast positions of the brothers in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) towards the rights and aspirations of the Syrian people as it commends the Council’s assertion in its final communique of the basic principles of a solution in Syria.
The outcome of the 40th GCC summit, which concluded in the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh on Tuesday, reaffirmed the Gulf countries’ firm positions towards the situation in Syria. The GCC reasserted its previous resolutions with regards to a political solution in Syria, the UN Security Council resolutions, and the need to establish a Transitional Governing Body.
The GCC recommendations for preserving the integrity of the Syrian territory came in line with the aspirations of the Syrian people and the goals of their revolution as well as with condemning Iran’s presence in Syria and the demands for the withdrawal of the Iranian-backed sectarian militias, the emphasis on the return of refugees, and the rejection of attempts to bring about demographic change in Syria.
The GCC’s welcoming of the joint statement on the need not to tolerate the use of chemical weapons in Syria and the need to hold perpetrators of violations against the Syrian people accountable represents a continuation of the firm positions and support for the positions of the Coalition in this regard.
The Syrian National Coalition reaffirms the pressing need to ratchet up pressure on the Assad regime to force it to stop its crimes against the Syrian people and stop its disruption of the work of the Constitutional Committee and all requirements for a political solution in general.
