Seven Years Since Syrian National Coalition was Recognized as Legitimate Representative of Syrian People

Syrian National Coalition – Syria
Department of Media and Communications
December 12, 2019

At the Conference of the Friends of the Syrian People held in Marrakesh on December 12, 2012, more than 120 countries participating in the conference recognized the Syrian National Coalition as “the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.”

Seven years have passed since that recognition came, which came as a direct result of the considerable efforts and tremendous courage being shown by the Syrian people and the sacrifices they are making to regain their legitimate rights.

The Syrian National Coalition expresses its deep appreciation to all the states that honored their pledges and stood by the Syrian people as well as to all the peoples that continue to support the Syrian people in their struggle against tyranny, occupation, and terrorism. However, the majority of the promises made at that time remains to be fulfilled. Indeed, the international community’s lukewarm positions contributed to the aggravation of the crisis and the obstruction of the course of the revolution.

Since that day, and although the promises and pledges are yet to be fulfilled, the Coalition have undertaken onerous responsibilities, withstanding various pressures and conflicting international interests. It has also been making strenuous efforts to combat terrorism, cope with the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Syria, address the issue of mass displacement and detainees, and following up on the work of the Syrian Interim Government. These responsibilities and duties require far more resources than those available for the Coalition. Indeed, they require the resources of a state with all its assets. Meanwhile, the United Nations, the international community, and the major actors have been unable to cope with some of these issues, let alone failing to fulfill the promises they made.

The Coalition’s commitment to its positions and its refusal to waive the revolution’s principles have placed it under further pressures, which were compounded by the failure of the international community to shoulder its responsibilities with regards to the crimes taking place against the Syrian people, the protection of civilians, the issue of detainees and forcibly disappeared, and the crimes of the use of chemical weapons.

Our commitment to the principles and goals of the revolution came out of our faith in the Syrian people, their rights, and the legitimacy of their revolution.

It is our duty to work together, build on what has been already accomplished, and deal with the future with an optimistic outlook that is full of self-confidence and faith in our people, their potential, and their ability to overcome the disaster and build a new Syria.

May our wounded recover, our detainees be free, and our fallen heroes rest in peace.
Long live Syria and its people, free and with honor.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
