Suwayda province saw five protest hubs opposing the regime on Thursday, specifically in the villages of Al-Matouna, Majadil, Namra Shahba, Qanawat, and Al-Thala. Residents effectively shuttered public roads as a demonstration against the worsening economic circumstances and the unjust decisions of the Assad regime. These decisions notably include the recent surge in fuel prices.
Local activists have reported a significant portion of internal public transportation joining today’s strike. This has led to a near-complete standstill across the province, mirroring the general sentiment of discontent among the populace.
Recently, a group identifying themselves as the “Syrian Peaceful Movement” of activists urged the commencement of a general strike in areas controlled by the regime in southern Syria. This strike serves as a reaction to the regime’s recent economic directives.
The Free Houran Conglomerate commented that these protests have emerged as a response to the economic and political strategies implemented by the Assad regime. They believe that these policies deliberately isolate and deprive the remaining Syrian citizens, potentially compelling them to seek refuge abroad.
The protests have arisen following the Assad regime’s decision to increase the prices of oil derivatives, triggering a surge in expenses for vital commodities and sustenance in the areas under regime control.
