The United States and its coalition partners have pledged to maintain the issue of the Assad regime’s evasion of accountability for employing chemical weapons against the Syrian people on the agenda of the UN Security Council, with this discussion recurring every month, despite objections from Russia and China.
US Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield conveyed to the Council on Tuesday that the Assad regime has consistently misled both the international community and investigators from the International Chemical Weapons Monitoring Organization. The organization had confirmed the Assad regime’s use of these internationally prohibited weapons on a minimum of nine occasions. Ambassador Greenfield added that President Joe Biden’s administration will sustain its pursuit of full accountability from the Assad regime.
Greenfield stressed, “We must not succumb to fatigue or, worse, indifference,” underscoring that Assad’s use of chemical weapons against civilians should not result in him eluding responsibility.
Abdul Majeed Barakat, the Secretary of the political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), emphasized the critical significance of refusing to remain silent regarding holding Assad accountable for his ongoing crimes against the Syrian population, especially his deployment of chemical weapons. This stand is viewed as pivotal for achieving a political resolution in alignment with UN resolutions on Syria. Accountability, Barakat asserted, would alleviate the suffering of Syrians and the prevailing political crisis within the nation.
Barakat further revealed that the SOC maintains continuous communication with the US administration and friendly states to advocate for steadfast measures and positions that support the genuine aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, justice, and democracy.
Earlier this week, Adedeji Ebo, the UN Deputy High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, reported to the United Nations that the Assad regime had evaded delivering a comprehensive account of its chemical weapons program to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. Ebo highlighted that the regime failed to address inquiries about its activities within the Scientific Studies and Research Center.
Ebo urged the Assad regime to swiftly furnish answers to all queries posed by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
