9 Killed on 38th Day of Truce as Assad Regime Launches New Offensive on Eastern Ghouta

February 6, 2017
in Local News

The Syrian Coalition said that at least 9 people were killed and dozens more injured on Sunday in continued violations by regime forces in six provinces across Syria on Sunday.

According to figures compiled by the Coalition’s media office, regime forces and their allied Iranian-backed militias violated the truce over 30 times on Sunday. The office noted that the majority of violations took place in eastern Ghouta where regime forces launched a new offensive to tighten the siege on the rebel-held area.

Regime media outlets on Sunday published photos showing armored vehicles heading towards eastern Ghouta in Rural Damascus. Local activists said that regime forces are preparing a new offensive in Ghouta aimed at displacing the local population.

Assad regime’s aircrafts on Sunday raided the towns of Harasta, Arbin, Hizrima, Housh Nasri, Dawahra, and the outskirts of the town of Douma, activists said. Despite violent airstrikes, the FSA and rebel fighters repelled attempts by regime forces to advance on the outskirts of eastern Ghouta. Regime helicopters dropped barrel bombs on the town of Maghr Almir in western Rural Damascus.

In rural Aleppo, activists said that regime forces shelled the towns of Orem Alqubra, Rashideen, Khan Alassal, and Anadan with heavy machine guns. Regime forces also dropped barrel bombs on the towns of Kafar Zeita, Alarbaien, and Morek in rural Hama. The towns of Taldo, Kafar Laha, and Ghantu in northern rural Homs, meanwhile, came under violent artillery fire.

Last week, residents of the Wadi Barada valley northwest of Damascus were forced out of their homes in the wake of a month-long brutal assault by regime forces and the Hezbollah militias. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Office)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people’s unity within the same Syrian soil
is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its
symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes
against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
