Qatari Foreign Minister Khalid al-Attiyah said on Friday that Bashar al-Assad and his regime are the biggest supporters of terrorism in the region, adding that Assad’s actions in Syria represent the real terrorism. Al-Attiyah also said that Assad had so far killed over 300,000 people in Syria.
At a news conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, after talks between the two sides in Moscow, Al-Attiyah said that the real terrorist threat lies in the continuation of the violence practiced by dictatorial regimes.
Al-Attiyah said his country’s position about a political solution in Syria has not changed, as he reaffirmed the need to form a transitional governing body with full powers. Al-Attiyah pointed out that the main disagreement between Doha and Moscow is about Bashar al-Assad’s legitimacy.
Attiyah also said it is necessary to build on what has been reached in the Geneva Communique of 2012, emphasizing that the political process cannot start from scratch. He stressed the need for serious support to the political process in Syria to end the suffering of the Syrian people. (Source: Agencies)
