The Arab League denied the existence of an Arab consensus for the return of the Assad regime to the Arab fold as it slammed US President Donald Trump’s latest decision on the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
The Arab summit in Tunisia concluded on Sunday. The Secretary General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said that “talking about Syria’s return to the League of Arab States is a sensitive and immature issue. Others do not think the issue should be on our agenda, while others said that we need a political process and a common ground where Syrians can meet.”
The Arab leaders in a draft statement condemned US President Donald Trump’s recent resolution to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
The draft statement also said: “The leaders have reiterated that the US’ declaration recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights is null and void.” It said that the decision constituted a blatant violation of the Charter of the United Nations stressing the “inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war” and UN Security Council resolutions 242 (1967) and resolution 497 (1981) which did not recognize the Israeli occupation’s annexation of the Syrian Golan Heights.
The draft resolution stressed Syria’s right to restore the Golan Heights as it noted that the US declaration to be contravening its responsibility as a permanent member of the Security Council to respect the UN Charter and the UN resolutions. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
