The Saudi-hosted summit of the Arab League has condemned the “criminal” use of chemical weapons in Syria and condemned s Iran’s blatant interference in the affairs of Arab countries. It also called for concerted efforts to find a political solution in Syria.
The summit, which was held in the Saudi city of Dhahran on Sunday, expressed its support for the missile strikes by the United States, Great Britain and France on Saturday against three chemical weapons facilities belonging to the Assad regime. It stressed the importance of holding perpetrators of war crimes in Syria to account.
EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, who attended the meeting, stressed that those responsible for the use of chemical weapons in the outskirts of Damascus must be held accountable.
Emir of Kuwait Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah pointed out that the international community continues to shirk its duty to protect civilians who are victims of war crimes. He said that the missile strikes were launched because of the failure of the UN Security Council to take action to address the situation in Syria.
Head of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, Nasr al-Hariri, addressed a speech to the Arab leaders attending the meeting as he regretted that no representatives of the Syrian opposition were invited to attend the summit.
Hariri said that the Assad regime caused a huge humanitarian disaster through the ongoing war crimes violating international and Arab resolutions. He pointed out that the Assad regime also brought external intervention by seeking the help of the Iranian terrorist militias that committed hundreds of crimes against the Syrians in many parts across Syria.
Hariri called on the Arab countries to combine efforts to topple the Assad regime and revitalize the political process to find a political solution in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council resolution 2254. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
