Erdogan Says Turkey May Launch Syria Offensive if Regime Attack on Idlib Continues

January 31, 2020
in Political News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday said that Turkey may launch a military operation into Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib if the situation in the region is not resolved immediately, adding that Ankara is losing patience with the military assault in the Idlib region.

President Erdogan said that Russia is violating agreements aimed at stemming conflict there. He added: “We will not allow the regime to put our country under the constant threat of migrants by tormenting, attacking, spilling the blood of… its people.”

“We will not refrain from doing what is necessary, including using military force,” he said, adding Turkey wants stability and security in Syria. He said that the Adana agreement gives Turkey the right to defend its borders with northern Syria.

On Wednesday, the Turkish president accused Russia of not honoring the Sochi or Astana agreements on Syria. The Turkish Defense Ministry on Tuesday said that it would respond in the strongest way and without hesitation to any attack by the Assad regime forces on the Turkish observation points in Idlib province.

Moreover, the Turkish National Security Council on Thursday said that Turkey will take additional measures against attacks targeting its forces and civilians in the province of Idlib.

“The commitment of our country to take additional measures against terror attacks that continue to target our security forces and the civilian population in various parts of Syria, namely Idlib, despite the agreements with countries active in Syria was reiterated,” the council said in a statement. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
