Ambassadors of the European Union countries said that Law No. 10 which the Assad regime has recently issued will be a crime should the regime insists on implementing it during a meeting with a delegation of the Syrian Negotiations Commission.
The Ambassadors stressed the need for accountability for war crimes in Syria as they reaffirmed their complete support for the political process according to the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council resolution 2254.
The delegation of the Commission held a series of meetings in the Belgian capital Brussels, including with the EU’s foreign policy chief, Frederica Mogherini and ambassadors and delegates of the 28-meber bloc.
The two sides discussed ways of reinvigorating the UN-led political process in accordance with Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council resolution 2254. They also discussed the issue of detainees, the missing and forcibly disappeared persons as they emphasized the important role of the European Union in their release from the prisons of the Assad regime.
The Commission called on the EU to help force Iran and its militias out of Syria, stressing that Iran’s withdrawal from Syria would ensure stability and the end of sectarian tensions.
Nasr al-Hariri, head of the Commission, said that the Assad regime forces and their allied Iranian militias are seeking a demographic change in Syria, especially after the issuance of law No. 10. Hariri said that Law 10 would prevent the return of refugees and displaced persons their homes.
Hariri called on the international community and the European Union to pressure Russia to convince Iran and the Assad regime to agree to a political solution and put the political process back on track.
For her part, Mogherini said that the EU remains committed to not providing any material support for reconstruction in Syria unless there is a genuine political process leading to political transition.
The Commission’s visit to Brussels came in the context of a tour that includes many Arab and foreign countries with various positions from the Assad regime. The Commission also visited the Sultanate of Oman. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
