The Syrian Negotiations Commission on Sunday expressed its support for the US decision to gradually pull US troops out of Syria following coordination with the Free Syrian Army and the Turkish government. It noted that the abrupt withdrawal could leave a vacuum that might be exploited by the Assad regime and its allies.
In comments posted on Twitter on Sunday, Head of the Commission Nasr al-Hariri said that a hasty withdrawal of the United States from Syria would likely leave a vacuum that the Assad regime forces and their Iranian allied militias would seek to fill.
Hariri went on to say that they have credible reports about military reinforcements being sent by the Assad regime forces and Iranian militias who are seeking to take advantage of the US decision to withdraw its troops from northern Syria and recapture these areas.
Hariri also said that US officials have officially and directly informed the Commission of the US administration’s decision to rapidly and fully withdraw its troops stationed in Syria. The United States will however continue to pursue its primary goals, namely to continue the fight against terrorism; ensure the withdrawal of Iran; and push for finding a political solution in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 2254.
Hariri said that ISIS has not been finished off yet, noting that the root causes behind the emergence of the extremist group have not yet been addressed. He stressed that the Assad regime and its allied Iranian militias are mainly to blame for all the disasters that have afflicted the Syrian people since the Assad regime launched an all-out war on the Syrian people.
