Human Rights Center Launches Campaign Calling for Holding Assad Regime Accountable for Chemical Weapons Use

The Chemical Violations Documentation Center of Syria (CVDCS) launched a campaign calling on the international community to hold the Assad regime accountable for its repeated use of chemical weapons against civilians in Syria.

In a statement, the Center said it would publish photographs of victims of the chemical weapons attacks for eight days to promote the concepts of victims’ rights and remind the world public opinion of the Assad regime’s war crimes and violations of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

According to the Center, the Assad regime used chemical weapons 261 times in Syria, killing 3,423 people and injuring 1,943 others, mostly women and children in six years. It noted that 12 international inquiry teams were involved in the investigation of chemical weapons use.

The Center called for civil society organizations to participate in the campaign in support of its objectives to hold accountable those involved in the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

The Assad regime used poison gas in several locations in Idlib, Hama and Homs province as well as in the Damascus suburb of eastern Ghouta. Humanitarian and human rights organizations have repeatedly called for an end to the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

The European Union has imposed sanctions on entities and senior officials of the Assad regime in response to their involvement in the chemical weapons program in the country since 2011.

CVDCS, a non-profit organization that was founded in 2012 with its headquarters in the Belgian capital Brussels, works on documenting the use of chemical weapons in Syria. (Source: the Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
