Leader of the Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt, lashed out at the Assad regime’s condemnation of the burning of a Syrian refugee camp in northern Lebanon and its calls for punishing the perpetrators.
In comments he published on Twitter, Jumblatt slammed the “cynical contempt for our minds and disdain of lives by a thuggish regime that destroyed and displaced entire towns and cities; murdered thousands of detainees; and committed countless assassinations in Lebanon.”
Jumblatt previously responded to provocative statements by the former Lebanese Foreign Minister, Gebran Bassil, against Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) stressed that the Lebanese authorities bear direct responsibility for the incident in view of its longtime inability to protect refugees or confront the incitement of hatred against them.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the SOC said that the Lebanese authorities are required to hold those responsible for this crime to account as essential to putting an end to this type of crime. (SOC’s Media Department)
