Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea slammed Hezbollah’s militias and attempts by some Lebanese political forces to normalize relations with the Assad regime.
Any solution in Syria would not succeed unless the communiques of the Geneva I and II conferences are implemented, said Geagea during the Lebanese Forces’ annual rally in commemoration of the “Martyrs of the Lebanese Resistance.” He said that the Assad regime is as bad as the ISIS extremist group.
Geagea called for the abrogation of the Fraternity, Cooperation and Coordination Treaty between Lebanon and the Assad regime as it was imposed on Lebanon while it was under occupation by the Assad regime.
The Hezbollah militia have bypassed the legitimate authorities in Lebanon and antagonized the overwhelming majority of Lebanon’s friends in the East and West, Geagea said. He pointed out that Hezbollah’s policies have brought sanctions and misfortunes on Lebanon, stressing that “it’s time to put an end to the dualism of arms [the state arms and Hezbollah’s weapons]. Lebanon’s only defense is the Lebanese Army.”
Geagea called for the release of Lebanese prisoners and missing persons in the prisons of the Assad regime, chief among them is Boutros Khawand before attempting to conclude agreements with the Assad regime, in a clear hit to calls by Hezbollah and its allies for restoring full political and economic relations with the Assad regime.
Geagea accused Hezbollah of facilitating the evacuation of ISIS militants hours before the Lebanese army was closing on their positions in Arsal. He lambasted the excuses made by Hezbollah to justify the deal it reached with ISIS. Geagea also defended the role of the Lebanese army in defending Lebanon.
