The Association of Muslim Scholars in Lebanon denounced the appointment of a Lebanese ambassador to the Assad regime, describing the move as representing a “departure from the Arab and international consensus to boycott the Assad regime.”
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Association said that “the appointment of an ambassador to the murderous regime in Syria is an attempt to recognize a regime that has long legitimacy and to condone the crimes it is committing against the Syrian and Lebanese peoples.”
The Association described the move as “violating the sovereignty of Lebanon through showing total submission to the dictates of Bashar al-Assad’s cronies in Lebanon and through the normalization of relations with the Assad regime.”
The statement concluded by stressing that “the safe return of Syrian refugees to their homes must be discussed with the relevant international bodies, not with the regime that terrorized and displaced them and relinquished Syrian territory and airspace to the Russians and the Iranians militias.” (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department + Agencies)
