Saudi Arabia reiterated that the terrorist repressive policies of the Assad regime against the Syrian people paved the way for the rise of terrorist groups such as ISIS and the Alnusra Front.
Abdullah bin Yahya Almoalimi, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the United Nations, renewed his country’s condemnation of the chemical attack the Assad regime launched on the town of Khan Sheikhoun in rural Idlib on April 4 which left about 500 people dead and wounded.
Almoalimi was speaking during a UN Security Council meeting held on Thursday to discuss ways to stop Iran’s interference in the region, the threat posed by the ISIS extremist group, and the Palestinian cause.
“We have already expressed our support for the strikes the United States carried out against the Assad regime and are ready to participate in any international efforts to eliminate the threat posed by terrorist organizations,” Almoalimi said.
Almoalimi added that Iran supports sectarian militias and seeks to clone the Hezbollah militia all over the region, pointing out that the Hezbollah militia are besieging people in Syria in violation of international law.
The US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley called for confronting the aggressive practices of the Hezbollah militia and Iran in the region.
Meanwhile, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov, said that the elimination of terrorism can only be achieved through reaching a comprehensive political settlement in Syria. He pointed out that perpetrators of the chemical attacks in Syria must be held accountable. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department + Agencies)
