US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the Trump administration sees no long-term role for the Assad family and the Assad regime in Syria.
Speaking to reporters at a briefing on the sidelines of the G20 Summit held in Hamburg, Germany, Tillerson said that “how” Bashar Assad “leaves is yet to be determined.”
However, Tillerson said he thinks there will be a transition away from the Assad government. “We have made this clear to everyone. We certainly made it clear in our discussions with Russia,” he added.
Syria was the subject of discussions between leaders of the major powers in the Hamburg summit, which came two days before the start of a new round of negotiations in Geneva to reach a political solution through the formation of a transitional governing body with full executive powers, including powers of the president.
