The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, on Friday called for a complete and immediate ceasefire throughout Syria in line with UN Resolution 2254 to enable comprehensive efforts to confront the coronavirus.
In a statement, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said that the Secretary-General calls on the parties to the Syrian conflict to uphold his appeal, which was launched on Monday, for the need for a ceasefire in all areas of armed conflict, and to devote themselves to combat the coronavirus.
The statement noted the request of the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, for an immediate nationwide ceasefire Syria in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
Pedersen reaffirmed he was ready to work with all relevant actors on the ground, as well as with major countries that can support the expansion of work to tackle the coronavirus and ensure the continuation of the ceasefire.
UN Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015) calls for an immediate cessation of attacks against civilians, urges upholding a ceasefire, requests the United Nations to bring the two parties together to enter into formal negotiations, and to hold free and fair elections under the supervision of the United Nations.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) earlier welcomed the appeal made by the UN Secretary-General and the UN envoy to Syria regarding a comprehensive ceasefire and saw it a step in the right direction. (Source: SOC’s Media Department)
