Hadi Al-Bahra, President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), expressed his appreciation for the European Union’s commitment to its pledges regarding Syria. He specifically praised the EU’s refusal to normalize relations with the Assad regime, lift sanctions, or begin reconstruction efforts until there is irreversible progress in the political process and a political solution in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
Al-Bahra highlighted that the EU’s adherence to its pledges supports the primary goal of reaching a sustainable solution based on UN Security Council resolutions, which aligns with the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people for a state founded on justice, freedom, and democracy.
He emphasized the importance of the EU maintaining this strategy while developing effective tools to pressure Assad’s supporters to genuinely engage in the political process.
Al-Bahra also stressed that human rights organizations continue to document daily instances of repression, arrests, and targeting of civilians by the Assad regime, rendering Syria unsafe for the return of refugees. This situation, he said, reinforces the international community’s responsibility to activate mechanisms for accountability and justice for war crimes and crimes against humanity being committed against Syrian civilians.
An EU spokesperson recently reaffirmed the EU’s stance on Syria, stating that the EU’s position “as outlined in successive Council conclusions remains unchanged: no normalization with the Assad regime, no lifting of sanctions, and no support for reconstruction until the regime meaningfully participates in a political process in accordance with UNSC Resolution 2254.”
The EU spokesperson also underscored that the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) “maintains that the conditions for a safe, dignified, and voluntary return do not exist in Syria.”
