President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi Al-Bahra, met with the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Türkiye to the United Nations, Ahmet Yildiz, to discuss the latest political developments in Syria, particularly within the Security Council and the UN. They addressed the challenges facing the Syrian political process, especially in light of the current deadlock.
The two parties explored ways to advance the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2254. Mr. Yildiz reaffirmed Turkey’s continued support for achieving a political solution in accordance with this resolution.
They also discussed the SOC’s vision to improve living conditions and boost the economy in northern Syria, given the decline in international humanitarian aid to the region.
The conversation touched on the conditions of Syrian refugees in neighboring countries, focusing particularly on the dire situation of Syrian refugees in Lebanon following recent decisions by the Lebanese Parliament.
The two also addressed the issue of Syrian detainees and political prisoners in Lebanese prisons, including Roumieh prison. Al-Bahra presented a paper detailing these issues and proposing practical steps to address the worsening crisis.
Al-Bahra emphasized that conditions in Syria remain unsafe for the return of refugees, which must be voluntary, dignified, and safe in accordance with international standards that must be adhered to.
