The President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi Al-Bahra, emphasized that educational institutions must be safe havens for children, students, and education workers and that regime forces must be prevented from attacking educational infrastructure.
Al-Bahra made these remarks on the occasion of the International Day to Protect Education from Attack. He highlighted that the Assad regime and its allies have, over the past years, deliberately destroyed educational infrastructure and created harsh conditions and significant challenges for the educational process. He described this as a calculated effort to undermine the stability of liberated areas.
Al-Bahra also stressed the importance of protecting education and called on donor countries to intensify their support for the educational system in liberated areas, especially now that recovery efforts have begun, and progress is being made despite difficult and exceptional circumstances.
The Syrian Civil Defense noted that attacks by the regime and Russia on educational facilities and schools continue to pose a serious threat to the future of upcoming generations. They added that the Assad regime and Russia have begun using more precise weapons, making it impossible for civilians to feel secure about the safety of children in schools.
The Civil Defense released statistics on attacks by regime forces and Russia on schools in northwestern Syria from 2019 to September 7, 2024, showing that 170 attacks on schools were carried out during this period.
