The President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi Al-Bahra, welcomed the French decision to lift some sanctions on Syria. He emphasized that Syria is awaiting more positive steps to lift all sanctions that affect the lives of the Syrian people and to help the country recover from the numerous crises caused by the Assad regime before its fall.
Al-Bahra called on European Union countries to work toward removing the sanctions imposed on Syria, arguing that they currently target the Syrian people’s ability to recover and hinder the Syrian state’s capacity to rebuild a safe, stable, and prosperous country.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced Monday that his country will take steps to lift some of the sanctions imposed on Syria. He noted that the European Union will lift certain sanctions on Syria, adding, “Today, we will decide to suspend some sanctions on the energy, transportation, and financial sectors.”
Meanwhile, EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas expressed her expectation that the European Union will soon agree to start easing the sanctions imposed on Syria.
