Vice President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdul Majeed Barakat, expressed his full support for volunteers and humanitarian organizations working to serve Syrians who are in dire need of various humanitarian services, despite the challenging circumstances. His remarks came on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, observed annually on August 19.
In a press statement, Barakat emphasized that the humanitarian situation in Syria continues to deteriorate year after year, largely due to the Assad regime’s brutal policies towards Syrians, the ongoing reduction of international aid, and the international community’s failure to fulfill its responsibilities in implementing a sustainable political solution in accordance with UN Resolution 2254. He described this resolution as the key to resolving the crises created by the regime and its allies in Syria.
Barakat also underscored the necessity of holding the Assad regime accountable for the heinous crimes it has committed in Syria, including those against humanitarian workers.
The Syrian Civil Defense reported that it has lost 310 of its volunteers over the past years, most of whom were killed in attacks by the Assad regime and Russia while performing their humanitarian duties.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) released figures on the dangers faced by humanitarian workers in Syria, noting that at least 130 humanitarian workers have been killed as a result of “hostilities” in northwestern Syria since 2014.
