The Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Haytham Rahmeh, has warned of the Iranian regime’s continuous efforts to alter Syria’s identity and culture, particularly in the capital, Damascus. He also raised concerns over the regime’s attempts to seize more properties and economic and service resources in the city.
In a press statement, Rahmeh noted that Iran is striving to strengthen its military presence in Syria through cultural, social, and service-related tools, largely due to the significant international pressure it faces over its military involvement in the country.
Rahmeh pointed out that recent efforts to foster cooperation between Iran and the Assad regime, including the twinning of Tehran and Damascus, aim to promote the sectarian project of the Iranian regime. This initiative seeks to erase Damascus’s identity and ensure the presence of sectarian militias and Iran’s loyalists in the area.
Rahmeh emphasized the need for the Arab League to take a firm stance against these projects and to work to preserve Syria’s identity and its capital, Damascus while preventing Iran from carrying out its agenda.
