The President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi al-Bahra, urged the international community to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria following the fall of the Assad regime. He emphasized that doing so would support the Syrian people during this critical period in the country’s history.
“We call on the international community to lift sanctions on Syria, as the criminal regime has fallen and its leader has fled the country,” Al-Bahra stated.
He explained that lifting the sanctions would help attract support and investments to Syria, which now urgently needs assistance from its allies and friends.
Following the 2011 Syrian revolution and the escalation of violations against civilians by Assad’s forces, the United States, the European Union, and some Arab countries began imposing sanctions on the regime. Over the years, these sanctions expanded in scope, with notable examples being the U.S. Caesar Act, enforced in 2020, and the Captagon Act 1 and 2.
The sanctions were implemented as a response to the severe human rights violations committed by the regime, along with entities and individuals associated with it. These measures include financial and economic restrictions, travel bans, and diplomatic sanctions.
The United States, EU countries, the United Kingdom, Canada, Switzerland, and Australia are among the leading actors enforcing sanctions on Syria.
