Vice President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdul Majeed Barakat, participated in a dialogue session held by the Al-Hayat Center for Community Development in the town of Afrin in the Aleppo countryside on Thursday. The session was attended by a group of local residents and representatives of associations, unions, and community events.
The session was also attended by SOC members Muhammad Salem Al-Mukhlaf and Azad Othman, and was titled “Syrian Tribes – Consolidating the National Role Politically and Socially and Enhancing the Legitimacy of Institutions.” It was part of ongoing sessions aimed at engaging the local community in the political process.
Barakat emphasized that the session was distinguished and highlighted that the social and cultural diversity of the Syrian people is a source of strength that can be harnessed and directed positively. He stressed the importance of strengthening the bonds between the components of the Syrian people, enhancing the legitimacy of institutions, addressing regional, tribal, and ethnic tensions, and approaching these issues in a manner that removes the causes of tension, fostering a mature and deep awareness of Syria’s diversity, which contributes to promoting civil peace.
Othman noted that these sessions hold special importance as they discuss the role of the components of Syrian society in promoting civil peace. This particular session focused on the importance of tribal communities in achieving civil peace, their role in the Syrian revolution, and the challenges they face in fulfilling their role effectively and defending the concept of the tribe as a social function.
