Hadi Al-Bahra, President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), held a virtual meeting with Ann Snow, the British special envoy to Syria, to discuss the latest political developments regarding Syria, recent events related to Syrian refugees in Türkiye, and the latest developments in Lebanon. SOC Secretary-General Haytham Rahmeh also participated in the meeting.
Al-Bahra emphasized the role of the Turkish government in maintaining security and protecting Syrian refugees. He highlighted the measures taken to arrest and investigate those suspected of participating in riots and sabotage, and the referral of those proven to be involved to the judiciary. Al-Bahra also discussed meetings with organizations and activists representing the affected areas and with Syrians in general. These meetings aim to inform Syrian refugees in Türkiye about the SOC’s position on these events and the results of its communications with the Turkish authorities.
Additionally, the meetings sought to establish rapid communication channels with refugees to address their needs, reassure them, and emphasize the importance of remaining firm in their positions and not being drawn into incitement and hate speech directed against them.
Al-Bahra stressed that providing a safe and stable environment, achieved through a political solution that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people in accordance with UN Resolution 2254, is one of the most important conditions for the return of refugees.
For her part, the British envoy reaffirmed her country’s commitment to its position on Syrian refugees, stating that Syria is still not safe for their return. She emphasized the necessity of revitalizing the political process and reaching a political solution in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254, as it provides the necessary environment that encourages refugees to consider a voluntary, safe, and dignified return.
