The political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) held its regular meeting on Thursday to discuss the latest on the ground and political developments in Syria, as well as the rapidly changing situation in the Middle East and its impact on Syria.
The SOC’s president, Hadi al-Bahra, provided a briefing that evaluated the outcomes of the 73rd regular meeting of the General Assembly. He also reviewed the efforts of the Legal and Human Rights Working Group, as well as the legal projects and proposals they presented as solutions to several legal and administrative problems.
Al-Bahra announced that the political cody would remain in continuous session to follow the rapidly unfolding developments in the region and their impact on Syria, and to oversee the implementation of the strategic plan approved by the General Assembly at its last meeting.
Al-Bahra also informed the political body about the outcomes of consultations and meetings with the Kurdish National Council to address the issues they raised.
Vice President Abdul Majeed Barakat provided a briefing on the meeting with the Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) organization, aimed at developing a joint action plan for activities and collaboration. He also discussed a meeting with several members of the Syrian Students Union in Istanbul.
Vice President Dima Moussa presented an update on the activities of the Syrian Women’s Authority and the meetings held with the SOC in the Turkish city of Şanlıurfa on the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting.
The attendees discussed political issues, particularly the briefing by the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen. They also addressed the issue of Syrian refugees fleeing from Lebanon to Syria due to air raids and missile attacks targeting various areas in Lebanon. The discussions highlighted the Assad regime’s attempts to exploit these circumstances on the international political stage. The political committee members focused on ways to ensure the safety and security of Syrian refugees in Lebanon and those forced to return to Syria due to the dire conditions.
The meeting also covered Israel’s military escalation against Iran’s armed proxies in the region, the impact of the upcoming U.S. elections on the region, and the policies of the competing candidates regarding regional and global issues.
The attendees discussed the peace process being debated in the Turkish parliament and its potential effects on issues related to the Syrian cause, emphasizing the importance of monitoring these developments and preparing for various scenarios that could reshape the region.
