The President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi al-Bahra, held a virtual meeting on Friday with the UK Special Envoy for Syria, Ann Snow, to discuss developments in the humanitarian and political situation and the requirements of the transitional phase following the fall of the former regime.
The meeting was attended by Vice President Dima Moussa, political committee members Abdulahad Astepho and Anas Abdah, and Antonia Murray, political officer at the UK Foreign Office.
Discussions covered the current humanitarian and political conditions in Syria. Al-Bahra emphasized the discipline among military groups, their respect for human rights in their dealings with civilians, and the continued efforts of the interim government to provide basic services to citizens.
The participants highlighted that the transitional phase represents a pivotal period in the history of any state. They stressed the importance of coordinating international community positions to ensure the implementation of the criteria for forming a transitional government, as outlined in Resolution 2254 (2015). These criteria include being inclusive, credible, and non-sectarian, as well as adhering to the established timeline for the transitional phase.
The meeting also focused on the importance of increasing humanitarian aid to curb the worsening humanitarian crisis in Syria, particularly with the onset of winter and shortages of fuel and heating supplies. The participants commended the efforts of local communities in organizing security and providing essential services.
For her part, UK Special Envoy Ann Snow reaffirmed her country’s commitment to supporting a comprehensive political transition in line with UN Resolution 2254 and its specified standards.
She also expressed support for the recent statements by the G7 and international efforts to coordinate humanitarian aid. Additionally, she emphasized the need to work with all regional and international parties to ensure compliance with UN resolutions related to Syria.
