A delegation from the Syrian Negotiations Commission is holding several meetings with foreign missions to the United Nations in New York, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly. The aim is to emphasize the importance of revitalizing the political process and achieving a political solution in line with UN resolutions on Syria, to fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.
The delegation included the President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, Badr Jamous, the President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi al-Bahra, and the head of the Syrian Interim Government, Abdurrahman Mustafa. Other members of the commission Safwan Akash, Jamal Suleiman, Fadwa al-Ajili, Dima Moussa, and Anas al-Abdah were also present.
The delegation met with representatives from the U.S., France, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Malta, and Qatar. They discussed efforts to rally international positions at the UN General Assembly to help move forward the political process, which has been stalled by the Assad regime. They also explored possible ways to implement UN resolutions, particularly the Geneva Communiqué of 2012 and UN Resolution 2254.
The delegation highlighted the continued criminal and repressive policies of the Assad regime against the Syrian people and the absence of a safe environment in Syria, which would allow refugees and displaced persons to return to their homes safely and securely.
The delegation stressed the importance of advancing the political process and negotiations to reach a political solution in accordance with UN Resolution 2254. They argued that rapprochement with the Assad regime outside the framework of a comprehensive political process will not solve issues related to refugees, terrorism, and drugs trade, all of which have worsened in recent years due to the regime.
The delegation underscored the need to support the political process in line with UN resolutions, as this is the only path toward a comprehensive political solution that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people. They also called on the international community to exert pressure to achieve a political solution and prevent the regime from obstructing it.
Additionally, they emphasized the important role of the international community in supporting political solutions in Syria, providing humanitarian aid to Syrians, and the potential role of the UN Security Council and General Assembly in finding binding mechanisms to implement UN resolutions on Syria.
