The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) stresses the need for the sanctions imposed on the Assad regime to act as an effective deterrent to this murderous regime and to be comprehensive so as to deny it all funding sources that it relies on through illegal means.
The Assad regime’s repeated attempts to dodge sanctions and avoid economic paralysis through illicit drug trade is yet another crime that is added to its endless litany of crimes. Assad has turned Syria, with the support of local and foreign militias, into a narco-state on the Mediterranean basin, by producing drugs in its areas and distributing them illegally to neighboring countries.
Indeed, the Assad regime has exported nothing but crises, terrorism and illicit drugs to neighboring countries. The New York Times newspaper previously reported how the Assad regime built an illegal drug industry worth billions of dollars on the ashes of 10 years of war.
The SOC stresses the need to sever all Arab and international ties with this criminal regime and to impose more sanctions on it, while proceeding effectively in achieving the political transition in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 with the aim of ensuring the security of the region and restoring the real, effective role of Syria.
