Press Statement
Hadi al-Bahra
President of the Syrian Coalition
October 9, 2014
The recent disclosure by the Assad regime of four secret chemical weapons facilities is astonishing and reprehensible. The regime has reportedly managed to retain three sites for development and research purposes, and a fourth site for chemical weapons production.
This latest revelation shows how low the Assad regime is prepared to sink in order to continue to intimidate the Syrian people into submission. It is a shocking example of the regime’s depravity and must not be taken lightly.
A report published last month by the OPCW Fact Finding Mission (FFM) found that chlorine was used in Syria and that it was delivered by helicopters, which points to regime’s culpability.
The OPCW must make absolutely sure the Assad chemical weapons capabilities are degraded and ultimately neutralized so that he cannot once again use those weapons against innocent civilians in Syria, but also against civilians across the entire region.
