In the early morning hours of Thursday, coinciding with the anniversary of the Assad regime’s handover of the Golan Heights to the Israeli occupation, the Assad regime forces and Iranian militias carried out violent artillery and rocket shelling on Idlib province, backed by aerial bombardment by the Russian occupation planes.
This ironic coincidence has long become understandable with regard to a regime that over the past 10 years has committed the most heinous war crimes, such as the use of chemical weapons and crimes against humanity, including torture, mass executions, displacement, looting and drug trafficking.
Developments over the past weeks and days and the past few hours revealed malicious intentions for yet a new military escalation in Idlib province.
It is imperative that regional, Arab and international parties seriously intervene to rein in the practices of the regime and its backers.
The United Nations and international actors are primarily responsible for ensuring an end to this new escalation. Keeping silent will send a wrong message, and will be understood as a green light for a new onslaught that will undoubtedly have catastrophic consequences for all parties.
The Syrian reality requires a serious international initiative. The world today is in need of politicians who show leadership and awareness of the seriousness of the current situation, as well as who have enough courage, wisdom and the ability to assume a historical responsibility that the current situation entails.
